How To Draw Rose And Leaves With Acrylics

This tutorial demonstrates how to paint an abstruse bouquet of ruby roses in a circular glass vase with a neutral background.

This painting can work as a Valentine's Day painting design or year round! The trivial hearts & extra rose on the table are an optional added touch.

I will showing you the technique that I apply to paint unproblematic roses. This technique has been explained in previous tutorials such equally my "How To Paint Unproblematic Roses" tutorial. I recommend that you practise these offset before doing this painting for the first fourth dimension.

Color Palette:

I used Liquitex BASICS acrylic paint.

Using Craft Paints?

If yous are using craft paints such as the Apple tree Barrel paints, yous can try subbing for these colors:

1. Pigment The Background

The groundwork is a composite, abstract background using the colors: mars black, titanium white and unbleached titanium. Load those three colors on your palette.

Measure your table line at the bottom of the sheet. This about four″ from the lesser. Apply a t-square ruler to describe the horizontal line.

Utilise a three/4″ flat wash brush and load it into the white, the beige and only a tiny bit of blackness.

Paint in criss-cross strokes letting the three colors blend. Add together more white or beige every bit needed. It should be a lite warm gray color.

If you want your strokes to wait smooth, you lot can use a "blending brush" to lightly alloy the colors on the canvas and smoothen out the strokes.

Continue to add the combo of those iii colors on your canvass. Makes sure to only apply small amounts of black so the background doesn't get too dark. Alternating between applying the color with the flat brush and blending the strokes smoother with the blending brush.

Y'all can vary the color throughout the background. Some of it will exist darker, some lighter, etc.

Endeavor not to over blend. It should have a nice variety of the light warm gray with dissimilar variations throughout.

Then use the aforementioned colors to paint the table surface area. Utilize the 3/four″ flat wash brush to paint left and right strokes. You lot practice non need to employ the blender brush for this step.

ii. Draw The Vase And Flowers

Then draw a few diagonal lines going within the vase. These will be the stems of the roses.

iii. Pigment The Flowers

I used three different reds for these roses. The unlike reds give them color variation. Y'all don't have to utilize the three reds, y'all can use just one or two.

Load your palette in the colors: cadmium crimson deep, principal blood-red and alizarin crimson hue. Utilize your #8 round brush. Start with any of the reds (I used cadmium red deep).

Pigment the circular shapes in a solid coat of the red. Then paint the next round shape with a different crimson (you don't need to rinse your castor each fourth dimension).

Fill each of the shapes with the reds.

Then mix a very dark cerise by mixing 1 office mars black to three-4 parts cadmium carmine deep hue. Use your #viii circular brush.

Paint a small dark area in the centre of all the roses. This is an oval/organic shape. Information technology doesn't have to be the same on each of the roses.

Information technology'southward okay if the color blends with the ruby that may not be dry.

So exercise the highlights on the roses. Rinse and dry out your #8 circular castor. Mix a low-cal red on your palette by mixing three parts titanium white to ane-2 parts cadmium red deep hue.

Paint "C" shaped curved strokes starting in the center around the dark area. Stagger your strokes working your way outwards.

Your rose will form with the lite red strokes leaving some of the dark scarlet still showing and the dark red-blackness in the center. You lot can become outside of your original shape a little with your curved strokes.

Continue to add the petals to each of the rose shapes. You will want to load more white onto your castor and vary the color a little bit. Some of the roses overlap other roses slightly.

4. Paint The Leaves

Use the #8 round brush to pigment the leaves. Load your palette with hooker'southward green hue permanent. Add a small-scale amount of cadmium red medium hue into the greenish to arrive more of a dark green, natural color. Water the greenish down only slightly so that it volition period well when you pigment the leaves.

Pigment the stem lines downwards in ane stroke.

Then paint the leaves and stems that are sticking out from the bouquet. To exercise the leaves, start at the tip of the leaf with low-cal pressure on your castor. Then put firm pressure on the brush to make the leaf bigger and rounded.

You can vary the colour of the leaves by adding more night or calorie-free greenish to them.

For some of the leaves, I painted i stroke on one side of the leaf with a lighter greenish (add together white into it on your palette to make it lighter). You can likewise fill. the gaps between the roses with dots of green.

5. Paint The Vase

Use your #4 round brush and titanium white to paint the vase. Load a small amount of water into the white and then your stroke will be thin and volition flow easily.

Outline the shape of the vase using one solid, consistent and thin stroke.

Lightly paint the inner water line by painting a curved line in the middle that overlaps your stems.

And so add together a minor amount of green to your water line and alloy it in with the white (optional).

To do the glare on the glass, use a 12 bright brush (or any flat brush). Load information technology into the whit and wipe some of information technology off and then theres barely any paint on your brush. So castor in curved strokes in the direction of the glass vase. When you lot do this "dry brush" it will brand your stoke look transparent similar drinking glass.

Do a few strokes going in more of a horizontal/curved direction on the bottom of your vase. Brand a few strokes at the acme of the vase overlapping the stems. You don't want to exercise too many strokes considering y'all even so desire to continue the glass run across through.

If any chalk lines are left, you lot can expect for your paint to dry out and take a baby wipe or soft damp cloth and wipe the chalk off.

6. Add More Leave Details

If desired, add more leaves around your bouquet to balance information technology out. I did another larger leafage in the lower left area of the bouquet because in that location was a bare space at that place.

Then on some of the leaves I painted white lines. You can practise this with a minor round brush and titanium white mixed with green to make it a very light dark-green.

7. Pigment Rose On Tabular array

To do the rose bud, start with your cadmium red medium hue. Paint a tear drop shape on its side and paint it in solid cherry-red. Apply a #viii round brush.

Then load white and red onto your castor (double load). Pigment a middle tear drop shape in 2-3 strokes without blending the white all the way in.

Paint a curve on one side and bend on the other. You should take what looks almost like side rose petals with the white blending slightly with the reddish.

Rinse the brush and paint the stem of the rose. Paint a pocket-size round green shape. Then paint a stem nether that.

And so paint the side leaves of the rose. These leaves first out wide, hug the bottom of the rose bud, slightly curve so get to a point outwards from the rose bud. Do one leaf on each side.

8. Pigment Hearts On Table

These little processed sweethearts are optional! To do them, I used my #4 round brush. I made different shades of pink and light red on my palette past mixing white with one of the reds. For instance, to brand the light pink color, I mixed white with principal ruby-red to create pink.

And so I did a few dissimilar reds and pinks with each middle by mixing various amounts of white with the reds on my palette. Paint the little hearts going in different directions.

Then use white plus the color of the heart to paint the bottom side of the heart to make information technology look 3D. Just practise one curved stroke below the bottom side of the heart.

9. Pigment Shadows

To do the shadows, yous want to mix a grey on your palette that is slightly darker than the table color but not too dark. Water it downwards to a thin consistency. Then paint your shadow below your hearts, below the vase and below the rose bud.

Paint left and correct strokes. So use your finger to smear information technology a little to distort the shadow.

The shadow should be very subtle and not very dark on the table.
